We're due for our monthly national and North Carolina polls this weekend so as usual we'd like your suggestions on some things:
1) Who should we include as the 5th Republican on our 2012 survey? We're going to permanently include Newt Gingrich now because he's been getting double digits in the primary on all of our state by state polls. Per usual we are only going to consider folks we haven't looked at yet.
2) What other questions should we ask on the national survey? Mostly interested in a) creative stuff that other polling companies wouldn't ask and b) stuff that gives us a better understanding of how things are shaping up for this fall and what's driving people's motivation.
3) It's North Carolina week and at the very least we'll no longer have to poll on Kenneth Lewis' favorability and head to head performance against Richard Burr, so we'll have room for more questions. What should we be polling on in North Carolina?
Always appreciate people's good ideas, and we almost always use some of them.
I guess you could throw Gary Johnson in there. Also looks like Santorum is going through the hoops. Is Guiliani on your radar...or anyone's radar?
ReplyDeleteFor the NC poll, is there some way to tease out if NC voters have a built in preference for female judicial candidates? I've heard that women have a built in 5 or so percentage points in statewide judicial races, and I'm curious if there is some way to shed some light on that. Along the same ling of thinking, the fact that we have a female governor, female US Senator (and potentially another Dem female Senate candidate in Marshall depending on Tuesdays results) mean that voters no longer think women are underrepresented in NC electoral politics (despite representation at other levels of government).

2) What is the most important consideration for you when deciding which candidate to vote for this fall: Health Care, Economy, Divided Government/Anti-Obama, Social Issues, Foreign Policy/Terrorism, etc, etc.
ReplyDeleteI keep asking for these two and keep getting ignored but I'll try again. Poll the California and Michigan races there is plenty to poll in both those states to fill up a week.

For NC Poll, you guys DEFINITELY need to include Rick Santorum. I don't like him AT ALL, but it is fairly clear that he is going to be a major candidate in 2012.
ReplyDeleteYou should poll North Carolina and even in National if people support overturning Don't Ask Don't Tell and allow homosexuals to serve openly. Also you could see if people in North Carolina support a constitution ban on gay marriage.
ReplyDeleteRudy Giuliani, who continues to keep the door open for another run in 2012, is one of the few Republicans out there with sufficient name recognition to render your poll results relevant and newsworthy. He's also perhaps the only potential GOPer out there who'd compete vs. Obama among moderates.

Jon Huntsman Jr. as the 5th Republican. As Governor of Utah he built a profile amongst the party and he's ducking a lot of heat from conservatives as Ambassador to China. Might not poll well against Obama, but interesting to see how the demographic split it.

ReplyDeleteYou want my suggestion, poll OHIO-17th District! Former Congressman Jim Traficant announced he will run as an Independent against Incumbent Tim Ryan (D), his former employee.

I highly recommend you guys poll this district. This will race will speak volumes to the TEA Party movement.
I second polling about offshore oil drilling. Would like to see if the oil spill has changed the views of North Carolina voters.
ReplyDeleteYou should poll for Ron Paul if he isn't already one of your permanent people. And if it is an open primary state, you should poll all voters, I think. I wouldn't be surprised if his percentage at least doubled, given the breakdown in the Rasmussen poll done between him and Obama in a head to head race.

Gary Johnson is touring the country as head of a 501c group looking very much like someone who wants to run for president, i'd put him as the 5th Republican as he is very wealthy and would get support from Ron Paul voters if he doesn't run. No way would any other people mentioned here i.e Santorum, McDonnell etc. be able to run effectively and won't so it's essentially a waste of time. Johnson for inclusion at least looks like he is highly likely to run.

ReplyDeleteI still want to see a poll where Trey Grayson runs against both Rand Paul and Dan Mongiardo as an indpendent candidate.
ReplyDeleteCrist is giving it a shot, and if Grayson gets good numbers in such a poll, it might convince him to run as an independent and push PPP into the national spotlight.
I'd still like to see someone poll an Obama vs. Hillary, Obama vs. Dean, and/or Obama vs. Dean vs. Hillary 2012 Democratic primary doomsday scenario. Don't assume it can't happen. Kennedy ran against Carter in 1980, and the 1968 Democratic primary was a free-for-all after Johnson declined to run for a second term. Dean has already said that he will "not strongly" support Obama in 2012, and if Obama's approvals decline into the Carter Zone, or if he moves to far to the center after election losses this November, the left wing of the Democratic Party could consolidate behind another candidate.
I'd try throwing George Allen into the 2012 Republican primary. He's trying to make a political comeback, though it's probably for a 2012 Senate rematch with Webb. Still, we can see how much damage the "macaca" incident and subsequent loss of his Senate seat really did to his future in the Republican party 4-6 years later.
I'd really like to see Dick Cheney or Glenn Beck thrown in the mix, just to see how they do. Cheney vs. Obama and Beck vs. Obama would be very interesting to see!
ReplyDeleteAs for the other questions... how about Puerto Rican statehood/independence? That was a bit of a hot topic recently, so folks might have thought about it. It would be intriguing to see the national thought on that topic.

ReplyDeleteI'm not very familiar with American politics, and it's probably very unlikely he would choose to do, but I wonder how popular a justice would be if went for the republican ticket.
