Marijuana in the California Election

PPP continues to find Proposition 19, which would legalize marijuana in California, favored to pass. The margin in this week's poll is 47/38 in favor, which does represent a tightening since July when we found it ahead 52/36. One thing that's interesting about the marijuana polling is that it really doesn't break down along party lines to the same extent most of the things we poll do. 56% of Democrats support it to 28% opposed and 30% of Republicans support it with 57% opposed. That's a lot more division within the ranks of both parties than we're seeing on a lot of stuff.

A big question to contemplate in California is whether the marijuana initiative is helping to stifle the enthusiasm gap Democrats are dealing with in most other states, particularly when it comes to intended turnout from young voters. We're seeing a much higher level of interest in this election from voters under 45 in California than in most places and those folks are highly favorable toward Proposition 19, planning to vote for it by a 54/34 margin.

Those same young voters are fueling much of the lead for Jerry Brown in the Governor's race and Barbara Boxer in the Senate- if Brown and Boxer win they may have the marijuana initiative to thank for driving turnout from folks who would otherwise have been drop off voters in a midterm. We'll do more research on what races are bringing people out the next time we poll California.

  1. The link leads to the Boxer-Fiorina poll memo. Is that a mistake?

  2. From the article: "if Brown and Boxer win they may have the marijuana initiative to thank" ____

Oh the pitiful irony that the Turncoat Brown and Boxer will benefit from a proposition they publicly skewered in the back just to further their political ambition.

  3. if you're polling the effect of ballot initiatives on turnout/enthusiasm gap, also poll Washington/income tax referendum... or Arizona/healthcare freedom initiative (unless we're conceding that Brewer and McCain are a stone-cold lock)

In other words, it would require mind-altering intoxication for voters to support such extremist far-left candidates.

  5. We did the WA initiative when we last polled WA, and then, Murray had a small lead over Rossi, but that was pre-primary, and not a LV sample.

  6. lower taxes legalize marijuana

Soon after marijuana is legalized, Thousands of dollars will be saved as there will be no need to arrest someone with it, provide that person with a public defender, feed that person sandwiches in jail.

Maybe than we can go one day without hearing about the states budget troubles, and for goodness sake lay off some of these dead weight cops and state workers.

Marijuana will always be treated like alcohol in the work place, some employers will terminate you if your intoxicated and others will smoke with you, it depends on your line of work.

Marijuana smokers were alienated in the 1960s and they were treated like idiots, that is one of the reasons it got smoked behind closed doors and privately people were afraid to be thought of as a pot head druggie and that will happen again in the future and it will cause a great decrease in the daytime use of pot, just hide and watch.

Everyone needs to stop thinking that the laws in this country control drugs etc, most people in this country are competent and able to decide what is best for themselves and for their lives, look at smoking cigarettes everyone did it in the 1950s it was cool but now that people know its deadly it has a much smaller group of users, and its legal! it just faded away and its not cool anymore.

Pot is for a select group of people and for the most part they seem perfectly normal while intoxicated, its the people that normally dont use it that have adverse affects and than think is bad for everyone, like other legal drugs some work well for some people but not everyone, for instance some people are allergic to penicillin and it could kill them dose that mean it should be made illegal, hell no it helps millions of people.

I am very upset at people that categorize pot with other drugs like Heroin, Meth, etc MARIJUANA WILL GROW AND REQUIRE NO PROCESSING OF ANY KIND JUST PLANT IT WATER IT AND USE IT FOR YOUR NEEDS AND WANTS ITS NATURAL AND ITS ALMOST FREE.

    Well thats my opinion.

  7. I love the gateway theory its about having something you can lean on when your completely clueless as why people change up from one drug to another.
Here are some reasons why people use multiple substances.
#1. Drug Dealers are great salesmen, a store selling pot will not offer you other drugs like cocaine etc.
#2. Marijuana will not gradually increase your high as you smoke it kinda just levels out after a few tokes, some people just want more than what pot has to offer, but in no way dose pot cause cravings for another drug.
#3. Another drug was passed around at a party, whats that got to do with pot!!, Gateway! are we laughing yet.
#4. Some people just prefer a different kinda high, physical uppers, downers, mental uppers, downers etc.
    #5. Friends share with you.
Now heres the real gateway theory!
You got hooked on a prescription drug like oxycontin and its not working anymore so you turn to street narcotics like heroin to help make you feel better.
Stop comparing Marijuana to Meth and Cocaine, Marijuana is natural and all the others are processed to form a drug, stop confussing the issue! the only reason Marijuana leads to more potent drugs are because the dealers are great salesmen.

Get rid of the lousey dealers and cartel just vote yes on 19
