If Jon Corzine ends up getting reelected by a single point, Chris Christie's weight could end up being what puts him over the top.
Only 11% of New Jersey's voters think that Christie's weight is a legitimate issue in the campaign. Even so 19% of them say that his size makes them less likely to vote for him.
You might expect that group to be monolithically Democrats and Corzine supporters. But of the people who say that Christie's weight is a problem for them 19% are Christie voters, 16% are Daggett voters, and 9% are undecided. 56% are indeed Corzine supporters.
Overall 35% of voters in the state think Corzine is trying to make Christie's weight into an issue while 47% do not, and 18% aren't sure. Predictably it's Christie supporters calling foul- 61% of them think Corzine is trying to exploit his weight- while the incumbent's supporters plead innocent with only 8% saying they believe the Corzine camp is attempting to do that.
In a close election anything can, um, tip the scales.

Weird that they say they voted for Corzine by 24 points in 2005, but for Obama only by 4. Those numbers don't seem to mesh.
ReplyDeleteI agree, and we find a similar thing in Virginia. I'm not sure people remember who they voted for four years ago.
ReplyDeleteDid you also poll Obama's approval rating in NJ?
ReplyDeleteHmm...tell that to the big fat blowhards GORE, BARNEY FRANK,MICHAEL MOORE ....
