Barack Obama's hit a record low in PPP's monthly national polling on his approval numbers. 45% of voters approve of the job he's doing while 52% disapprove. This is the first time he's topped the 50% disapproval mark in our surveys.
There isn't any one smoking gun to point to in explaining Obama's diminished standing. In the last month he's seen small increases in the number of voters disapproving of him among Democrats (from 13% to 16%), Republicans (84% to 88%), and independents (55% to 56%) alike.
The two most troublesome things for Obama in his numbers at this point are his standing among white voters and independents. Whites now disapprove of Obama by nearly a 2:1 margin, with 62% giving him bad marks and only 35% saying he's doing a good job. With independents his approval is just 40% and 56% disapprove of his performance.
Nearly four months after its passage PPP continues not to find any evidence voters are warming up to the health care bill. 40% of voters favor it while 53% are opposed, numbers actually representing a regression since a poll right before the final vote found 45% support and 49% opposition. That shift may be more reflective of the President's declining popularity than anything having to do with the bill itself, but nevertheless it seems clear Democrats continue to lose the public opinion battle on the issue.

"Reaching out across the sea -- making friends where foes used to be. Giving hope to humanity... More than ever, Nixon now, for you and me!"
ReplyDeleteHigh water mark for liberalism in America, the Nixon presidency.
Sorry, what's that? Approval dropping?

Anyway, will be fun to see how this shakes out in the fall.
Still say your man (our president) is in decent shape for re-election -- especially if he loses Congress.
Interesting how independents are less likely to vote for a candidate, by pretty much 2 to 1, that's endorsed by Obama, Clinton, AND Palin. Is there anyone who's endorsement would be valuable with them?
ReplyDeleteIt's just about the economy. If the economy perks up so won't Obama's numbers.
ReplyDeleteI still don't see any republican that can beat him in 2012, unless they somehow nominate a sane moderate.
Still they have no plans except to oppose or go back to Bush era economics that got us in this mess.

ReplyDeleteThe more Americans learn about Obamacare, the more the reject it... and the congress that pushed it through against the will of the American people.
Obamacare is driving independents to support Republicans... and support REPEAL.

He should have listened to Rahm.

These numbers indicate the house majority is in big time trouble this fall. I would think that in suburban and rural areas where democrats made tremendous inroads, the majority of the demographic there is white voters. Maybe 80 to 90% + in many instances.
Was this poll of likely voters or registered voters?
ReplyDeleteWhen I read the PDF file, it saus the poll was conducted June 9-12.
ReplyDeleteObviously, this is wrong and is a typo.
On my blog a few months ago, I noted that the decline in Obama's approval ratings has been essentially exponential. That is, the higher Obama's approval, the more quickly his approval rating fell.
ReplyDeleteBased on that, I concluded that Obama's decline was primarily due to a failure to meet the public's expectations. I declined to speculate as to what the expectations were, though; people of different political leanings will give very different answers to that question.
Joel, the economy WILL NOT "perk up" under Democratic tyranny. The economy will only revive when employers and investors can expect LOWER taxes, LESS uncertainty on new regulation, legislation, and litigation, and LESS government intrusion (spending).
ReplyDeleteThis alone makes even ill-defined Republican plans VASTLY SUPERIOR to the terribly intrusive and ill-conceived Democrat agenda.
And you actually think no Republican can beat Obama?! LOL! A better question is whether Obama could possibly be reelected, no matter whom his opponent would be.
Obama will face a bigger landslide defeat than Carter's loss to Reagan.
"It's just about the economy"?!?
ReplyDeleteIt isn't the fact that Obama has been wrong on every single issue... and Republicans have always had superior ideas?
It isn't that Obama is an abusive, arrogant, bigoted tyrant?
If it is the economy, Obama is screwed. If it's Obama's policies, Obama is screwed. If it's Obama's personality, Obama is screwed. If it's Obama's leadership or administrative capabilities, Obama is screwed. No matter what it is, Obama is a lame duck already. Obama will be a one-term failure.... unless he turns sharply to the right and hires more centrist advisors (like Bill Clinton and Dick Morris), Obama cannot possibly regain Americans' trust after he has so horribly violated that trust.
The economy is not going to change a thing. This argument reminds me of 2006 when republicans thought there would be significant progress on the ground in Iraq.
ReplyDeleteThese events take years to happen, not months.
When Democrats claim that poor approval numbers are just the economy, it reveals Democrats' pathological inability to accept responsibility and accountability for their horrendous mistakes. No wonder America is turning to the right to find responsible adults.
ReplyDeleteQuinnipiac: Obama would lose Pennsylvania!
ReplyDeletePennsylvanian voters believe Obama does not deserve reelection (48-42)
and they would vote for an unnamed Republican instead (41-40).
Independents disapprove of Obama (53-40) and would vote for a Republican in 2012 (37-33).

Facts Herbie can't wrap his dogmatic little head around:
ReplyDeleteTaxes are at their lowest this year since Herbert Hoover but the economy is only treading water after digging out from the Bush collapse, and nearly half of the current budget deficit comes from the Bush tax cuts.
A shift within the margin of error on support for a presidential priority matching a similar shift in that president's approval rating suggests that the priority is being rated as a partisan matter; there is no change indicating any sort of actual alteration of belief.
Invading Iraq, leaving Afghanistan in limbo for seven years, exploding the federal deficit, eliminating effective oversight on offshore drilling, gutting FEMA, and implementing DOMA were all Republican ideas. They haven't had a good idea that's actually proven successful in practice since Desert Storm I, just oversimplified bumper stickers (needed for over-simple minds like Herbie's).
Herbie still hasn't been able to find an actual demonstrable example of 'abusiveness' or 'bigotry' or 'arrogance' that's anything more than his own blind hatred coloring everything he sees. The charge of 'bigotry' in particular is vastly amusing coming from someone who openly supports the idea of inviting businesses to engage in racial discrimination, believes that Jews are damned, and thinks 'Islamofascism' is a word.
Oh Please - you republicans are ridiculous. I, like many others am against the healthcare bill because it doesn't go far enough!!!
ReplyDeleteI also knew Obama was a phony from the start, but do you really think McCain would have been better-especially with that idiot Palin at his side? Obama probably will lose, because he blew too loud a horn, and doesn't have the power or the integrity to deliver.
But who do you imagine has the power or the integrity to do a better job? Perhaps Kucinch on the left or Paul on the right - but neither will win for that very reason - they do have integrity - and the true powers that are will not allow them that power - and it will very easy for them, because most people are idiots and too easily swayed and deceived by the main stream media.
Another thing to note is that no sitting President with less than 51% approval has won reelection since 1948.
ReplyDeleteObama still has time to reverse his decline, but I'd say that if he's in the same position at this time next year, it'll mean big trouble for him (barring a "Dewey Beats Truman" last-minute upset).
This is not about republican/democrat, democrat/Rebpublican. we the people do not owe any allegiance to one party we show allegiance to the constitution and the bill of rights !! when are we going to wake up and realize that these grand fights between the two parties are just smoke screens to keep the masses from paying attention to the lies and fraud that are being commited behind closed doors to shut the middle and lower class sectors out so that the very wealthy and special interest groups can create policies that we the people get no say in! screw any party as being a leader in bringing us a brighter tomorrow! we the people need to stand up and take our country back! or we might as well welcome the "Ameero" and the NAU and forfeit or sovereignty! Welcome canada mexico and usa and the new world order! we are in big trouble! and we are allowing the govrnment pick us apart right under our eyes ! how much more freedom will you give up to see a democrat or republican be in office think people open your eyes !!!! s.c.
