Question Suggestions

We're going to poll California and New Hampshire this weekend. What should we ask in those states beyond the obvious?

38 comments:

  1. NH: Repeal Gay Marriage?
CA: Primary for DiFi in 2012?

  2. Are you doing any of the ballot questions in California? If not, that might be something to add, since there is usually a severe shortage of polls on those. I don't have specific ones in mind, but I'm sure others would.

  3. 2012 general election matchup

  4. Ask about whether they support a mosque being built near Ground Zero

  5. Poll New Hampshire Republicans on how they feel about Sarah Palin's Ayotte endorsement.

  6. Not sure if you're already planning on asking about Prop 19 in California, but someone else (SUSA?) actually had legalization winning.

It'd also be interesting to see how Californians feel about Arizona SB 1070 and how, if at all, it's affecting their vote this year.

Also, although this is a little lower profile, I'm curious if Mayor Newsom has an actual race on his hands or not for LG.

Even though it's insanely early, Presidential primary polling in New Hampshire would be more interesting than elsewhere.

  7. Why aren't you doing any Washington poll this cycle??

  8. Most polls measuring the 2012 GOP race in NH show Romney with a large lead. I'm interested in seeing if a more moderate Republican like Giuliani or Scott Brown would cut into his action in the Granite State.

It'd also be helpful to learn whether Palin's endorsement of Ayotte make primary/general election voters more or less likely to support the NH senate candidate.

  9. "Are you in favor of extending federal unemployment from 99 weeks to 126 week?"

  10. Lets find out if folks are willing to spend in order to fund expansion of public transit and development of alternative energy -

Also - which party is viewed as more likely to implement chance in policy away from SOV and carbon based travel.

  11. I'd like to see new Republican Presidential primary polls for these two states.

New Hampshire, if I recall, was polled before you added Gingrich and Paul to your permanent list of candidates. I'd like to see what effect the inclusion of Gingrich would have in New England.

You showed Gingrich winning in California last time you polled there. Since then, there's been a lot more serious talk of a Gingrich candidacy. I'd like to see if that has improved Gingrich's standing in California.

  12. NH needs primary and general numbers, and gubernatorial numbers would be good. The generic head-to-head on the state legislature would be good too, as with 400 seats in the state house of reps, doing a broad sampling should map decently well to outcomes and trying to poll individual seats would be absurd. With only two House seats, those are reasonable to poll; the five Executive Council seats would be nice to see but probably would have high error bars. So... Republican Senate primary, Senate general, gubernatorial general, both house seats, and generic head-to-head on the state legislature (prefer Democratic control or prefer Republican control). Favorability numbers on John Lynch, Judd Gregg, Jeanne Shaheen, Paul Hodes, Carol Shea-Porter, and Barack Obama.

But at a minimum Republican Senate primary, Senate general, and gubernatorial, definitely.

For California, the Senate head-to-head, gubernatorial head-to-head, and marijuana legalization. The state leg is so gerrymandered it's pointless to poll on it for the most part, other than maybe a couple of seats.

  13. In California I agree you should ask about prop 19 (legalizing pot). Also a question on gay marriage would be interesting- let's see if public opinion has moved since Prop 8.

  14. do you have a favorible view of MA gov Deval Patrick and do you think Andrew Cuomo is qualified to be president

    ReplyDelete
  15. Also in NH, the Kuster/Swett primary would be good, too, since there's only the two house seats.

  16. NH: Medical marijuana? Decriminalization? Legalization? In a "Live Free or Die" state, there might be an interesting result.

Please poll on the PRIMARIES for New Hampshire's US Senate race and its Congressional races (except Democratic primaries for Senate and the 1st Congressional District, where it's a foregone conclusion), NOT just potential matchups.

Also: whether or not New Hampshirites support the appropriation of federal funds for local infrastructure projects such as widening I-93 between Manchester and the Mass. state line, and extending Boston-to-Lowell commuter rail service up through Nashua, Manchester, and Concord.

  17. "do you have a favorible view of MA gov Deval Patrick and do you think Andrew Cuomo is qualified to be president"

What do they have to do with CA and NH?

  18. Mary Bono Mack vs Antonio Villaraigosa for DiFi's seat.
Also poll the highly competitive LG and AG races in CA.

  19. house seats in NH and prop 19 in California

  20. Which is more important - reducing the deficit or federal spending to create jobs?

  21. Thank you for polling NH. Can you do Delaware and Iowa soon?

  22. Prop 19- marijuana

  23. Tons of stuff you could ask ask in my home state of CA.

    1) antonio villaraigosa - What are his favorables statewide? He has gone through some scandals in LA, and seems a likely candidate should DiFi, who will be 79, retires from the Senate in 2012.

    2) Lieutenant Governor - Newsom vs the moderate Republican Maldonado

    3) Attorney General Race - Cooley vs Harris. Cooley, the Republican has a real chance to win this in liberal California. Field Poll had him up by 3.

    4) Ask if Meg Whitman's ads are getting tiring.

    5) Ask if California should be run like a business (Meg Whitman who has run a company before)

    6) Ask about offshore drilling, in this politically liberal state.

    7) Ask if Barbara Boxer has too much of a temper. and is too feisty. People like DiFi better because she is more calm and moderate, while Boxer has been known to throw fits with the global warming debate and the time she asked in a committee hearing to be called Senator instead of I think ... mam.

    NH

    1) Do not just poll Katrina Swett in NH. There is a Democrat by the name of Ann McLane Kuster, who is a netroots candidate and who may be better than Swett to take on the Republican. Also poll the Democratic primary in NH-02.

  24. Do the two house seats for the general. Also 2012 gop primary could be fun.

  25. Please Please I BEG you to poll the other statewide races in California. Attorney General and Lieutenant Governor are very competitive and we have only seen one GE poll for both. I would LOVE to see the data. Please!!!!!! Also for California ask something to the effect “Do you believe it is acceptable for someone to spend hundreds of millions of dollars of their money on an election?” or "Do you find Meg Whitman's commercials annoying". Also perhaps try polling to see if voters regret passing prop 8 regarding gay marriage last year. Thanks!

  26. Both house races in NH please. If Either party is leading in both races, I look for that party to have control of the house come November. The ultimate swing disctricts.

    ReplyDelete
  27. NH: Gubernatorial, Senate, NH-01, NH-02. Possibly Primaries for each. Otherwise some 2012 general election numbers may be interesting to see if Republicans can take back the Granite State.

CA: Lt. Gov, Attorney General, 2012 General Election numbers?

  28. As a Californian I want to know if Prop 20 is going to pass. We've already taken the legislative redistricting from the state assembly. We need to take the congressional redistricting too. My fear is that Prop 27 will confuse he hell out of people.

There hasn't been a sitting Republican congressmen running for the Senate since I've been in California. While you could poll a primary I'd be curious to see a McCarthy or Nunes v. Feinstein match-up.

  29. California: Senate race, Gov race, Prop 19, 2012 Senate race
New Hampshire: Senate primary and general, Gov race, House races, Republican presidential primary, and opinion about the Free State Project

    ReplyDelete
  30. I like the idea of polling Patrick and Cuomo for no apparent reason whatsoever. It would really throw us California respondents for a loop.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Should California reform its initiative and referendum system? i.e., is it too easy to pass state laws by initiative and ballot?

    ReplyDelete
  32. New Hampshire:

I´d like to see the GOP Primaries for Senate and for 2012.

Maybe you could do the DEM Primary with Obama vs. Dean or Obama vs. Hillary as well.

Or a few early 2012 General election matchups.

And yeah, if gay marriage should be repealed.

    California:

Senate and Governor of course and the 2012 GOP and DEM primaries with 2012 General election matchups. It´s never to early to start with this ! ;-)

    Bonus questions:

Support for Gay Marriage and the Marihuana proposition.

  33. is scott brown ever included as a presidential candidate in 2012? if not, it might be interesting to see how he polls. He's a relatively young, good looking guy who's "bipartisan" and can win over independents.

  34. What about seeing which baseball team - Dodgers, Angels, Athletics, and Giants, and Padres is the most popular?

  35. "What about seeing which baseball team - Dodgers, Angels, Athletics, and Giants, and Padres is the most popular?"

We did that in May, and we're gonna do it again.

  36. CA:

Bono Mack vs Pougnet in the 45th.

  37. I think a great question to ask would be to question voters of both parties and independents in both states about how liberal and conservative they are on social issues vs. economic issues. I've heard there are a lot of libertarian dems in new hampshire who are social liberals and fiscal moderates, with the opposite being the case in california.
