If the Republican base has any influence over it Michael Steele's days as the boss at the RNC will be coming to an end soon. More than 2/3rds of Republican voters across the country who have an opinion about it would like to see Steele replaced.
47% of Republicans want Steele out, 30% have no opinion, and just 23% want him to stay. This represents a loss of support for him since the summer. A July PPP poll found that 28% of Republicans wanted Steele to leave the RNC, 27% wanted him to stay, and 55% had no opinion. Despite the party's successes at the polls earlier this month there's been a 19 point movement in favor of Steele's departure and a 4 point decline in the percentage of Republicans who would like to see Steele stick around.
The sentiment in favor of replacing Steele is pretty steady across the ideological spectrum of the GOP. 49% of moderates and 46% of conservatives alike want him out, as do supporters of Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Mitt Romney, and Mike Huckabee.
If the Republican insiders bear any resemblance to the Republican base Steele's exit is probably only a matter of time.

Hi
ReplyDeleteWill you let us vote for a few of your next 2012 state polls ?
Count me as someone who supported Steele last year and who now wants him ousted.
ReplyDeleteI think, more than anything, his "Honest Injun" comment finally drove it home for me. Way to be unnecessarily racially insensitive when one of the great benefits of your candidacy was demonstrating that the GOP was colorblind when it came to race.
From my political conversations with conservatives, it seems that the general feeling among conservatives is that the Republicans did well this year in spite of, not because of, Steele's leadership.
ReplyDeleteWhen was the last time he's said something dumb? The momentum isn't there. Besides, he's got a supporter in Palin, and not even half want him out.
