Rhode Island received the most votes from distinct individuals in our 'vote on where to poll' this week so that's where we'll go this time around along with North Carolina.
For Rhode Island: who should we test against Sheldon Whitehouse besides Don Carcieri and what questions should we ask besides the races for President and Senate?
And we're appreciative of good North Carolina question suggestions as well. We're going to finalize these polls tomorrow afternoon so any ideas you can give us in the next 24 hours will be in the mix and much appreciated.
Rhode Island? Really?! Do we expect anything less than 20%+ margins for Obama and Whitehouse? Ugh.
ReplyDeletewhat about John Robitaille?
ReplyDeleteFor NC, I would ask whether they support of oppose the Democratic National Convention being held in Charlotte in 2012. I would also include gubernatorial race head to heads that include Republicans like Rep. Sue Myrick, Rep. Patrick McHenry, and of course the former Charlotte mayor who she battled last time around.
ReplyDeleteRI-Sen Republicans; John Robiltalle, Catherine Taylor, John Loughlin.
ReplyDeleteAlso in Rhode Island- Chafee's approval, same-sex marriage, Republican-Prez primary? (Is Romney doing as well there as in NH?)
North Carolina- maybe state legislature- will Dems win it back in 2012?
I'd include John Robitaille, Gio Cicione, and perhaps John Loughlin as reasonable opponents.
ReplyDeleteIn terms of other questions, I'd do...
1. an approval rating for Linc Chafee
2. an approval rating for David Cicilline
2. support/oppose gay marriage legislation
Scott avedisian would be a good candidate, or catherine taylor
ReplyDeleteRhode Island Gay Marriage
ReplyDeleteNorth Carolina positive/negative feeling to 2010 Charlotte DNC
Maybe try Lincoln Almond, Donald Carcieri against Whitehouse.
ReplyDeleteJack Reed approval would be good.
Also a retrospective approval rating for Claiborne Pell would be really cool.
Bonus Republican: Scott Brown (to see how a moderate R would play against Obama in a deep blue state.)
ReplyDeleteSenate: Avedisian, Fung, Almond, Cariceri, Robitalle, Loughlin - in primary and against Whitehouse.
Just for fun: Curt Schilling's approval numbers - see if the 38 studios controversy has taken a toll.
Rhode Island?
ReplyDeleteOver CT, ME, WA and NH? No sense...
Chafee in a Senate match-up as an Indy. I know he's not likely to leave the Governor's mansion, but it'd be interesting to see.
ReplyDeletePFFFF Rhode Island? Seriously? Come on guys poll NH and go on the Virginia field too.
ReplyDeleteNo one cares about Rhode Island.
I second John Robitaille.
ReplyDeleteI would also poll the 2012 Republican Presidential primary, though we'd all have to keep in mind that Rhode Island's primary doesn't work that way--primary voters select individual delegates (though the proportion of selected delegates for each candidate seemed to roughly match the candidates' popular support in 2008).
Please ask about marriage equality. That is the hot topic now in RI and it is why RI won the polling.
ReplyDelete"Do you favor or oppose Rhode Island allowing gay and lesbian couples to enter into same-sex marriages?"
would be a good question.
Make sure you ask about gay marriage in RI; that's why it won the poll.
ReplyDeleteBwsides that...I guess poll Carcieri vs. Whitehouse, but that's about it.
I'll just put this out there as to why R.I. won:
ReplyDeletehttp://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/02/13/943085/-Action:-Tell-PPP-to-Poll-Rhode-Island
The legions over at Dailykos were urged to in the hope that a same-sex marriage question would be asked. Now, I don't think this was ever on their main page, and I surely do not purport to know whether this advert made a legitimate difference. I may be on to nothing here.
But I did think R.I. surged late in the game- or am I making that up? It's hard to tell, but I thought I'd put this out there.
Ask about marriage equality in Rhode Island.
ReplyDelete"The legions over at Dailykos were urged to in the hope that a same-sex marriage question would be asked."
ReplyDeleteWait...
Isn't DailyKos supposed to be paying for its polls under contract, instead of just gaming PPP's open polls?
Mr. Debnam? How does this go over with you?
Please be sure to poll a marriage equality question. It's tracked well for some time. But with the lawmakers perched to vote at any time, it'd be nice for them to be working from fresh information and reinforce the results of previous polls.
ReplyDeleteMarriage equality is the biggest issue in Rhode Island right now - definitely poll that.
ReplyDeleteFor RI Sen: John Robitaille, Scott Avedisian, John Loughlin, Giovanni Ciccione, Allan Fung, T. Joseph Almond
Chafee and Cicilline's favorability ratings
RI: gay marriage (you might as well, since that's why so many people voted for the state)
ReplyDeleteSuggestion for poll's questions:
ReplyDeleteMarriage equality for LGBT citizens.
I was among the people people who participated in the Daily Kos campaign. It was entirely user generated, and had no affiliation with DK, aside from being posted there. (And no it was never front paged.)
ReplyDeleteNothing untoward going on. If PPP puts something out for a popular vote, it can be expected people may build a campaign to influence it. That is what PPP hopes by putting these out, to generate hits to their own site, right?
I would like to see the approve/disapprove numbers for gay marriage in Rhode Island.
ReplyDeleteMarriage equality
ReplyDeleteInteresting Times:
ReplyDeleteI don't think the administrators of the DK site had anything to do with the ploy. I believe that site works as such that different bloggers post their own material within the site, or something like that- and the call was made by such a blogger.
I don't know if the call made a big difference, and if so whether the fellow making the call intended to really tip the scales. I think he was just publicizing a vote contest, and promoting one option- fair and innocent. If indeed my suspicion is (it may after all not be) justified, then the sheer size of the community over there would be the culprit here.
So, I don't think there's any dirty tricks at hand, though I share your legitimate concern.
Marriage Equality.
ReplyDelete@Interesting Times.
ReplyDeleteThe people who run Daily Kos and who pay for PPP polls had nothing to do with the fact that diaries appeared on Daily Kos urging people to vote for Rhode Island in the poll.
That was pretty much my doing, and I have no association, monetary or otherwise, with Daily Kos, its front-pagers, PPP, or anything related, other than that I write user diaries there.
So, to be clear, Daily Kos, the organization, had absolutely nothing to do with the fact that RI won the poll.
Please poll marriage equality in Rhode Island, that's why it got my vote. But Kos didn't send me over here. I'm just really into marriage equality.
ReplyDeleteI and many people voted for Rhode Island because of the marriage equality issue coming up in that state (for those of you confused as to why anybody would vote for Rhode Island).
ReplyDeleteI think you should poll voters about the Same Sex Marriage issue in Rhode Island.
Rhode Island: support / oppose extending civil marriage to same-sex couples
ReplyDeleteFor Rhode Island - the hot topic is marriage equality! There are a lot of eyes and ears on RI, Maryland, California and Iowa on this topic right now...
ReplyDeleteI think marriage equality will be a hot topic in the '12 elections... All of the candidates for RNC Chairman were specifically asked for their views on marriage equality - and the ultra-right wing, christian conservatives are certainly pushing this issue to the forefront. Not sure they will be able to make hay of it, but...
If you ask about marriage equality, please put it in language that is neutral.
ReplyDeleteRI -- marriage equality poll please
ReplyDeleteRhode Island: Marriage Equality
ReplyDeleteFor Rhode Island: voter approval of gay marriage (last time polled it hovered around 60%) -- has it increased with a vote in the legislature imminent?
ReplyDeleteNorth Carolina -- voter approval of the President (he narrowly won there in '08), and voter approval of the democratic party.
Morgan from Indianapolis
Lots of us who never read DailyKos still want to know about same sex marriage. I live in Boston and am curious to know what my neighbors think.
ReplyDeletePoll marriage equality.
ReplyDeletesame sex marriage in RI
ReplyDeletesame sex marriage in RI
ReplyDeleteI live in Rhode Island and echo the calls to poll on marriage equality. The main poll currently making it into local news stories was done by one of the advocacy groups and was written in a biased way. Solid, unbiased data would be helpful to the public conversation that is currently happening here. For the Senate race, the Republicans in play would be Carcieri, Robitaille and Loughlin.
ReplyDeletePoll marriage equality.
ReplyDeleteI think a question about support for marriage equality would be timely.
ReplyDeletemarriage equality!
ReplyDeleteIncluding gays in the institution of marriage.
ReplyDeletePlease ask a question about marriage equality-we need a fair and unbiased poll about the issue.
ReplyDeleteSame-sex marriage legislation.
ReplyDeleteI too hope to see marriage equality as a part of that poll. The more legitimate polling firms that cover the issue, the better. And PPP is certainly one of the good ones!
ReplyDeleteEmployment rights/non-discrimination against gay people
ReplyDeleteGay marriage
Other, more specific rights = equality re sexual orientation
For those who are wondering how in the world Rhode Island could have won, a concerted effort was made to get people with NO interest in this topic to vote in order to sway the vote unfairly. Here's an example, posted by 'JP Massar' to a poker list:
ReplyDelete"Subject: Five seconds of help
Go here: http://publicpolicypolling.blogspot.com/2011/02/this-weeks-finalists.html
Vote for Rhode Island.
(no signups, no muss, no fuss, just a couple of clicks)
(A group of people is trying to get some new polling results on marriage equality in Rhode Island, and if PPP polls RI, they will ask about it since it is a hot topic. But first we need to get them to do the poll; they do respect the results of their
poll on where to poll)
Thanks!"
It's a shame, really... but to be expected, I suppose.
Didn't you guys just poll NC? What's the point of a re-poll? I think you even polled the Charlotte question... but maybe I'm wrong. Ask that one again, it will be interesting.
ReplyDeleteRI: Just for kicks, David Segal v. Whitehouse in a Democratic primary.
Might be an interesting place to ask a Clinton approval rating question as well. NOT in relation to Obama. Just on her own.
Agree. Marriage equality.
ReplyDeleteRhode Island - Marriage Equality
ReplyDeleteShow which way the river is running, ask about same sex marriage.
ReplyDeleteRI - marriage equality. I want to prove NOM wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'd like to see you poll in Rhode Island on marriage equality (=same-sex marriage)
ReplyDeletePoll Rhode Island for marriage equality.
ReplyDeleteMarriage Equality!
ReplyDeleteThe freedom to marry.
ReplyDeleteFor Rhode Island, marriage equality would be an excellent topic.
ReplyDeleteMarriage equality - that should be a no-brainer.
ReplyDeleteI don't know why people voted for Rhode Island, among the least interesting options available. Still, poll gay marriage.
ReplyDeleteMarriage equality, for sure.
ReplyDeleteRI: Scott Avedisian, popular moderate Republican mayor of 2nd largest city, close to Chafee.
ReplyDeleteAsk if gay couples should have the same rights as straight couples. Particularly, the right to be married.
ReplyDeleteyou should not poll gay marriage to keep people from gumming up the voting ever again.
ReplyDelete"Didn't you guys just poll NC?"
ReplyDeleteJan. 20-23. We do NC every month, and that will have been a month this coming weekend.
"I think you even polled the Charlotte question... but maybe I'm wrong"
We asked if they WANTED the convention, but that was asked 9-12 days before the announcement that it WOULD be here.
Well, I voted for New Hampshire, but Rhode Island was going to get a look sooner or later, I guess. Same as Hawaii, the outcome of the toplines isn't much in doubt, but it'll be a baseline for a deep blue state. Marriage equality is the only question I know of for Rhode Island to do otherwise, being the only New England state that doesn't have gay marriage (at least for now; the teatards who've taken over the NH government will probably try to roll back civil rights there before they get voted out en masse again in 2012).
ReplyDeleteAsk the folks in Rhode Island about marriage equality for gay and lesbian couples.
ReplyDeleteAsk about marriage equality, please.
ReplyDeletePlease ask Rhode Island whether it supports or opposes marriage equality for all of its taxpaying adult citizens.
ReplyDeleteI know you polled on the DNC coming to Charlotte before the announcement was made, but I would like to see you ask a follow-up (are people glad it's coming, I guess). I would also be curious to see whether people think having the convention here will help Obama/Democrats in NC for 2012. I understand that conventions don't typically result in votes, but I wonder whether NC voters *think* that having the convention here will help Dem chances overall.
ReplyDeleteChoose marriage equality. The people have spoken. Huzza!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm changing my vote for a marriage equality question, too.
