Ohio and Wisconsin won our vote on where to poll this week.
In Ohio we'll obviously test Josh Mandel and Kevin Coughlin against Sherrod Brown. Anyone else?
We'll do some Jim Tressel related questions of Ohio State fans- anything in particular you think we should ask?
Obviously we'll do the standard Presidential stuff we do in every state and any other suggestions you might have would be much appreciated as well.
In Wisconsin I think it's a given we'll test Russ Feingold, Tammy Baldwin, Ron Kind, and Steve Kagen against Tommy Thompson and Mark Neumann. Anyone else we need to throw into those Senate general election match ups?
We'll test Feingold and Tom Barrett against Scott Walker in a potential recall election. Any other Dems we should throw in that hat?
As with Ohio we'll do the standard rate Presidential stuff but if you have any other good Wisconsin question ideas please let us know as well.
Thanks as always for the great suggestions!
see how tressel rates as a senate candidate. approval for portman and thoughts on him being a supercommitteeman
ReplyDeleteWhat about Barbara Lawton in Wisconsin for Governor
ReplyDeleteMay be time to drop Cain and add Paul on the detailed presidential questions.
ReplyDeleteOtherwise, the usuals in these two states, and the obvious public union questions in WI.
Test David Obey and possibly Herb Kohl against Scott Walker. Maybe even for fun you could test a couple of the recall candidates that lost last night, my suggestions would be Fred Clark or Sandy Pasch. My thinking on this is to see whether Scott Walker is unpopular enough that a ham sandwich could be him or will it take a known top tier campaigner.
ReplyDeleteScott Fitzgerald is rumored to be running for senate on the R side.
ReplyDeleteAlso, Ron Kind might have more of an eye on governor and not senate.
Stuff I'd love to see in the Wisconsin poll
ReplyDelete* Satisfied / dissatisfied are dissatisfied with the way things are going in the state today
* Approve / disapprove of the way Scott Walker is handling his job as Governor.
* Approve / disapprove of the way the State Legislature is handling its job.
* Approve / disapprove of the job Republicans in the State Legislature are doing.
* Approve / disapprove of the job Democrats in the State Legislature are doing.
I'd also love to know whether the flood of third-party ads impacted voter opinion / participation, though I'm not clever enough to figure out how to frame that.
My unconventional question would be whether the respondent would support the drafting of a new US Constitution. It'll be good to see in light of recent events if people feel the current system is failing or whether not.
ReplyDeleteWell obviously, I think that we should cover Scott Walker's popularity after the recall yesterday and to see where the unions stand. Also, the usual horse-race match-ups at the presidential level in both states. The same-sex marriage question is interesting, although I know you asked in these state previously. Might be nice for an update on it though.
ReplyDeleteDave Obey for the recall.
ReplyDeleteYou should ask people in Wisconsin if they are pleased or disappointed that the Republicans retained control of the State Senate after yesterday's recalls.
ReplyDeletetest generic legislature in both states
ReplyDeleteFor WI, test feelings about the the recalls and whether voters have become election weary.
Check on Dave Obey against Scott Walker.
ReplyDeleteI assume you'll be polling the Governor, he's introduced some pretty bad policy lately. Also Issue 2 is the initiative that takes away union rights, it'd be interesting to see how that's doing.
ReplyDeletedefinitely test Obey for Governor and I think it would be fun to see Charles Woodson for Senate or Governor. Also test State Senator Dale Schultz popularity. Try Sandy Pasch for Governor and Senate. Try Thomas Nelson against Reid Ribble. Rob Zerban against Paul Ryan. Pat Kreitlow agains Duffy. Kind for Governor.
ReplyDeleteAsk about recalling Walker and Kasich, as well as their approval ratings. Thorw in WI Lt. Gov. Rebecca Kleefisch and OH Lt. Gov Mary Taylor in the Senate races.
ReplyDeleteSB 5 repeal in Ohio
ReplyDeleteI'd be interested in some sort of question on how voters feel about the idea of a recall itself.
ReplyDeleteFor instance, do you support raising the requirement for the number of signatures (currently 25% of the winning candidate's vote) to initiate a recall election?
Or, do you support a requirement that a cause be listed on a recall petition?
I suppose a question about the redistricting maps as well, though the results will be predictable.
In Ohio, ask people who they have a more favorable opinion of, Jim Tressel or John Kasich.
ReplyDeleteAlso ask about the effort to nullify the individual mandate. Qunnipiac had it as a 3 point race.
In Wisconsin, ask people if the recalls make them view the state law permitting recalls more or less favorably.
You should consider a "generic ballot" asking Wisconsin voters which party they will likely support in the 2012 state legislative elections. This kind of statewide generic ballot question could help us keep decent track of state legislative races even though you can't poll individual districts.
ReplyDeleteGeneric Republican vs. Generic Democrat, both houses of the Wisconsin state legislature.
ReplyDeleteGay marriage, both states.
Auto bailout, both states.
There's been a slight push in Ohio for a non-partisan / fair redistricting process. Could you poll some question about how Ohio voters feel about gerrymandering and redistricting?
ReplyDeleteI suggest that for the Republican primary, you ask "Who do you believe is most electable?"
ReplyDeleteThis is motivated by a recent article in which an Iowa Republican described Bachmanna as more electable than Pawlenty....
All the wisconsin stuff listed is great. Obey or Baldwin vs. Walker would be a good one for governor. Find out what percent of people would be willing to sign a recall petition...25%% is needed. try Duffy vs Krietlow in what may be the only marginally swing district after redistricting just made everything a safe seat.
ReplyDeletePopularity of Sandy Pasch, Alberta Darling, and Dale Schultz
ReplyDeleteOhio - Whether the collective bargaining/union hate legislation should be repealed
ReplyDeleteAll states: if you could choose again today, would you vote for Barack Obama or John McCain?
ReplyDeleteOhio: in baseball, do you prefer the Indians, Reds, Tigers, Pirates, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, or other?
... in football... Browns, Bengals, Lions, Colts, Steelers, or other? (I realize I probably don't get this last question, but no harm in asking!)
Wisconsin: in the state budget fight, do yo favor the Republicans, the unions, a muzzle of both, neither, or undecided?
In baseball, do you prefer the Brewers, Twins, Cubs, White Sox, Yankees, Red Sox, or other?
Please test Obey against Walker
ReplyDeletePardon my typos above... autocorrect fails
ReplyDeletePoll a Strickland/Kasich rematch again.
ReplyDeleteAlso, for fun (in the vein of the Charlie Sheen question): poll a Governor's matchup between John Kasich and LeBron James and John Kasich and Jim Tressel.
In Wisconsin, ask how closely they followed the recall elections.
What approach should Rob Portman take on the super committee:
ReplyDeleteA) Only Make Spending cuts
B) Consider Tax Revenues and spending cuts.
I would ask those who disprove of Obama's performance whether they would want him to be more liberal or less liberal. CNN did this and it may explain why some who disapprove would vote for him anyway.
ReplyDeleteYes, agree with Alan.
ReplyDeleteI think your polls should ask of those who disapprove of Obama's performance, do you think Obama is too liberal, too conservative, or about right.
I second a bunch of the ideas suggested above: generic state legislature, gay marriage, and the auto bailout approval/disapproval.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
In Wisconsin, I would ask whether citizens think that having the power of initiative and referendum (as in OH) would have improved the tone of political dialogue over the last months, or something like that. I would also ask if they want those powers for their state's voters.
ReplyDeleteI'm also curious how a generic R would do in a gubernatorial (no recall mentioned, perhaps) question versus Feingold and Barrett.
In Ohio I'd ask whether they think Kasich is more on the side of 'people like them' or more not.
Thanks for listening!
Ohio has had several issues with legislators having DUIs/investigations for domestic assault.
ReplyDeleteShould a state legislator arrested for DUI resign?
Also, Rep. Jim Jordan in a GOP Senate primary and against Josh Mandel.
Kapanke and Hopper for senate, primary and general.
ReplyDeleteFeingold vs. Obama Dem primary.
Cieslewicz for governor.
ReplyDeleteIn Wisconsin, I think it would be very important to know if you signed a recall petition for one of the Republican Senators, did you also vote for the Democratic candidate in the recall election.
ReplyDeleteDave Obey has openly indicated his interest in running for governor, but only to fill out Walker's term. Rep. Ron Kind is also interested in running against him.
ReplyDeleteCongressman Kind has mentioned he was interested in the Governor's race...he would be worth the test.
ReplyDelete
