We're doing our first national 2012 poll of the year this weekend. As always we will test Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, Mitt Romney, and Newt Gingrich against Barack Obama as well as a 'bonus Republican.' We always take your suggestions and then do a vote on who to include as the extra Republican, the only rule is that we won't repeat anyone more than once every six months so that rules out Jan Brewer, Chris Christie, Glenn Beck, and Marco Rubio for January. Beyond that fire away and we'll pick the finalists tomorrow.
Any other good- and especially unique- question suggestions for the national poll would be much appreciated as well.

How about John Bolton? Not suggesting he has a chance, I'd just be interested.
I think Rep. Michele Bachmann would be an interesting choice.
How about John McCain. He obviously won't run, but it's a nice bench-mark. Well known, sometimes seen as moderate conservative... hard to envision them coming up with someone better than he was in 08'.

Rudy Giuliani is one of the few potential 2012 candidates with sufficient name recognition to render a relevant poll result this far out; and unlike '08 when he was competing for votes with McCain, the socially moderate former NYC mayor would have little to no competition in the GOP outfield from left to center field.
If not Christie (due to your rules) .. Go Pataki!

I second Rudy Giuliani. He's the only guy from the 2008 field who hasn't been tested by PPP so far. I do think he deserves to be polled, even if he doesn't get the top vote. Maybe switch him for Newt or just add him?
It'll be interesting to see if a social moderate and fiscal conservative can do against Obama. Also, Giuliani has name rec that most other choices just won't have.
Bachmann is not going to run. I suggest Mike Pence, a tea party favorite who is strongly considering a run in 2012.

Jon Huntsman or Mitch Daniels.
John Boehner. His name will be constantly in the news in the next 2 days, so he'd likely have higher name rec than T-Paw, Daniels, Perry, etc. If y'all don't test him for Pres, it would still be good to see how his favorablility ratings are going into his speakership.

Jeb Bush- be interesting to see how he would do.
If you actually want to test a seriously possible contender, poll Thune (his stock is higher on Intrade than Gingrich's and Huck's, with the latter of which I disagree.)
If you're looking for a gag test, poll Clarence Thomas (not an actual suggestion).
An even better benchmark than McCain, and a real (albeit remote) possibility:

Also, ask the "who would you like to have a beer with question" or "who would you most like to have as a neighbor" or "who do you most admire" among the Republican primary voters.

Definitely John Bolton - he has seriously floated the idea and Politico reported that he is leaning towards running.
I think the John McCain idea as a "benchmark" is reasonable. Although McCain has been a total loon the last couple of years so I'm not sure ...

Backing up Huntsman. Name recognition might be a bit low, but should still be interesting.

The last general election poll of Ron Paul vs. Barack Obama, from Rasmussen, had Obama edging out Paul by a one-point margin: 41% to 40%. Would be interesting to see those results either confirmed or denied by a different pollster.

I want to see Ron Paul polled - we have almost no data on him in the general. You can probably figure out my political orientation too now, but I think it would be interesting to add "libertarian" to the "liberal/moderate/conservative" question, and see what the results are. My other request would be to test Clinton as the Democrat.

I still like the 'metapoll' question, asking about opinions on the political polling industry in general.
As a 'bonus Republican,' how about The Governator? I know Ah-nold isn't constitutionally eligible to run, but he's got pretty much universal name recognition, was about as moderate as a Republican gets these days (thanks to avoiding the primary his first time), and still has a lot of appeal nationally for his movie career.
With Herman Cain considering a bid, ask whether voters would prefer someone with a long history of public service, someone with a strong business background, or a combination.
When you do polls, you include additional people with the big four. They all get scraps. Perhaps you could do a poll that only includes people other than the big 4. There may be no dark horse, but you'd find out if there was one who it could be.
Mike Pence... He has got a lot of buzz lately.
Would be interested in seeing a Third Party/Independent question, either attached to a particular hypothetical candidate (eg Bloomberg, although this might not be his month), or just a generic "Independent." Also like the suggestion above for the "Sevond Choice" question.

We have polled both Ron Paul and Mike Bloomberg as independents against Obama and Romney in the past, and it only helped Obama.
Here's a good question:
Please ask if American voters want to abolish the Electoral College.
Or just ask if American voters want to continue electing their President by Electoral College or by a National Popular Vote.
