Question Suggestions for South Carolina and Massachusetts

We're going to poll Massachusetts and South Carolina this weekend. Important states for 2012 and it's been a long time since we looked at either so we're making a rare executive decision to do those rather than having a vote this week.

As always we appreciate your question suggestions:

-In Massachusetts who should we poll against Scott Brown? I think we'll probably look at 5 or 6 different people.

-Anything we should ask about in Massachusetts besides the races for Senate/President and the approval questions we do in every state?

-I figure our South Carolina poll will end up being pretty similar to our Iowa poll from this morning in terms of content. Anyone else whose favorability we should look at or any other questions we should ask about the Republican field?

-And any non-GOP Presidential race related question ideas you might have for South Carolina would be appreciated as well.

Thanks!

Can you poll a Haley vs Sheheen rematch please in South Carolina.

Elizabeth Warren for Massachusetts

might as well ask how gay marriage is faring in Massachusetts as well as how the Ryan end-of-medicare budget polls.

Kevin said...

Poll a primary challenger against Scott Brown....Elizabeth Warren in primary + general...maybe Ed Markey too.

Oh, and might as well see MA approval for gay marriage, seeing as they have had it for close to six years. I assume dog-man and woman-toaster-tree marriages aren't commonplace, but let's see.

Given the corruption of one part rule are Massachusetts voters finally ready to vote out incumbent democrats?

South Carolina poll suggestions:

Vince Sheheen favorabilities (he did really well in last year's elections, probably has a future in state politics.)

Sheheen vs Haley rematch (guessing Sheheen will probably win, just from turnout differences at the least.)

Gay marriage/Civil unions/None question

'Would you consider voting for a qualified candidate of your party for office, if they were gay?'

State legislature generic ballot

Congress generic ballot

"Would you consider voting for a qualified candidate of your party for office, if they were gay?"

^might be too specific, but this has got me thinking.

In 2007, I think, someone did a national poll asking something akin to "Assuming they were otherwise qualified and had similar views as you, would you vote for an (blank) for President?"

And blank was filled in with "African American, Woman, Gay, Catholic, Mormon, Muslim, Atheist" etc. It got a lot of attention and I don't think one has been done since.

Considering the Republican primary has an African American candidate (Cain), two potential women candidates (Palin and Bachmann), and two Mormon candidates (Romney and Huntsman), it's certainly relevant to see what segment of the electorate holds bias and resentment towards certain groups.

Keeping in mind that the MA Convention is this Saturday, and Sen. Patty Murray has indicated a top-tier name would announce this week, here's who to poll:

DECLARED:
Alan Khazei
Bob Massie
Marissa Defranco
Setti Warren

POSSIBILITIES:
Elizabeth Warren
Mike Capuano
Warren Tolman

For Primary challenge to Brown:

Jeff Perry (MA-10 R Nominee)
Sean Bielat (MA-09 (FRANK) Nominee)
Mary Z. Connaughton (Rep. Auditor Candidate)

There we go. There were a few other good questions in there too. I really think it would be neat to poll it again...it's the type of poll you'd only have to do every couple of years.

I think it would be interesting to poll Massachusetts residents on the topic of collective bargaining and same-sex marriage.

In SC, test Lindsey Graham against a generically more conservative candidate in a 2014 primary.

Elizabeth said...

Definitely a Haley vs Sheheen rematch. Think there would be some interesting results there.

TXIconoclast said...

South Carolina:

I'm wondering if Lindsey Graham is vulnerable to a challenge by someone further to the right. So perhaps: If you could replace Lindsey Graham with someone more conservative would you?

Do you support a Jim DeMint presidential bid?

How do voters in South Carolina feel about the Ryan Medicare proposal?

Poll Sonia Chang-Diaz v brown

South Carolina:

Barack Obama vs. James DeMint and Lindsey Graham.

Anonymous said...

Jim DeMint announced today that he is mulling a run for President. Sure would be nice to see how he stacks up in the primaries as well as against President Obama in 2012.

Anonymous said...

I would like to see how Sonia Chang-Diaz and Elizabeth Warren fare in MA.

Waldo Lydecker's Journal said...

Does Jim DeMint, who's now asking God to tell himwhether to run for President, do ANYTHING for South Carolina, or does he just draw a paycheck from taxpayers here?

Andrew said...

Perhaps a Lynch vs. Sonia Chang-Diaz primary matchup for the Congressional District, but PPP should definitely poll Chang Diaz in a Senate matchup.

Mark said...

For Massachusetts, definitely Joe Kennedy III, Rep. Capuano, Rep. Lynch, Mayor Warren, Alan Khazei, Bob Massie, and Elizabeth Warren. Maybe Sonia Chang-Diaz and/or Rep. Markey as well.

Steve said...

I second the request for gay marrieage popularity in both states. One state is Deep South where it will be unpopular and the ohter is the most liberal state in the union where gay marriage was first legalized.

coolidgen said...

MA: Would be really interested in some specific Romney-related questions.

Against Brown:
Setti Warren
Alan Khazei
Bob Massie
*Last minute announcement*

In the Primary field add one of the following:
Marissa Defranco (other declared candidate
Steve Grossman (Treas.)
Bill Galvin (State)
Tim Murray (LTG)
Sen. Sonia Chang-Diaz

I honestly don't think that E. Warren wants to run, and I wouldn't include her (unless she announces, obv).

Throwing Tim Cahill in as an Independent.

Deval Patrick faves/unfaves
John Kerry faves/unfaves
Scott Brown faves/unfaves

Debt-ceiling raise
Brown's vote on Ryan budget
Brown's vote on Planned Parenthood cuts

Romeny/Brown v. Obama/Biden
Olympia Snowe in the GOP field

Bruins chances for Stanley Cup?

In SC:
DeMint in the GOP field
Romney/DeMint v. Obama/Biden

I also like the idea of asking the "would you support a candidate who was a (blank)" question. It would be interesting to compare the results between two states that are very different politically, and it could also get a lot of attention.

A rematch question for Governor in both states would also be good. Maybe another Mark Sanford question in South Carolina to see how people feel about him now that he's been gone for a while.

Please poll:

Alan Khazei
Setti Warren
Bob Massie
Elizabeth Warren!
Mike Capuano

Anonymous said...

Against Scott Brown: Elizabeth Warren, Setti Warren, Alan Khazhai, Joe Kennedy.

For fun, poll former Canadian Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff against Scott Brown. What would Americans think about this?

Also, poll a rematch between Scott Brown and Martha Coakley.

Anonymous said...

I would like to see a Setti Brown or Elizabeth Warren vs Scott Brown matchup plus Barack Obama vs Sarah Palin in both Mass & SC question. Plus, I would start asking in all my state polling about whether one wanted Ryancare or Medicare.

Anonymous said...

Alan Khazei
Setti Warren
Bob Massie
Warren Tolman
and I guess Elizabeth Warren bc everyone's so excited by it!
also Stephen Lynch... who is not much less Republican than Brown.

You could ask Mass. voters whether they'd rather see Warren at the CFPB or in the Senate race. I think, and hope, this would result in their recommending her for the CFPB spot. That's not to say she wouldn't be good to test for Senate, or that those voters would necessarily not want her in that race if she isn't tapped for the CFPB.

Mark B. said...

As to the re-do polls that are on the minds of so many followers of your polling company lately:

A Haley-Sheheen re-match would sure as hell be interesting, of course. We've seen that united Republican governments beget buyers' remorse, but Dems Dayton and Perdue seem to be on the up-and-up. That means either being Democrats or being in a divided government protects a Governor. A Massachusetts re-match poll for Governor (including Green Jill Stein and at least the very well performing independent Tim Cahill) would perhaps settle the matter.

Sorry for the two postings. I wanted to be less verbose, but it seems my line of reasoning took a bit of space. Thanks for listening! :)

With Romney about to officially declare, now would be a good time to ask Massachusetts voters how they feel about Romneycare, Obamacare, and/or Romney flip-flopping on the issue.

U likely voters?

1) did you vote Brown/Coakley?

a) Brown
b) Coakley

2) if you were to vote today all over again, would you vote...

a) the same
b) different
c) not sure

Anonymous said...

What do you consider Scott Brown's signature issue:

a) environment
b) taxes
c) jobs
d) don't know

For Massachusetts:
-Elizabeth Warren vs. Scott Brown
-Setti Warren vs. Scott Brown
-Gov. Patrick's approval rating

For South Carolina:
-Haley's approval rating
-Sheheen vs Haley rematch

For both:
-State legislature generic ballot
-Congressional generic ballot
-Gay marriage - legal/illegal
-Abortion - legal/legal in some cases/illegal
-Support for unions and their right to collectively bargain.

In Massachusetts, I'd like to see if the high profile ad war between Scott Brown and the League of Women Voters over EPA regulation of greenhouse gasses has put forward any results. Are people more informed on the issue? Do they side with the LWV? Do they side with Brown?

Anonymous said...

To make a comparison between Senators, it would be interesting to see a hypo matchup between Scott Brown and John Kerry.

For MA-Sen:

PJ Crowley
Sonia Chang-Diaz
Stephen Lynch
Ed Markey

Anonymous said...

For SC:

"Would you be willing to vote for a qualified member of your party for President if that candidate were a Mormon?"

"Do you consider Mormons to be part of the Christian faith?"

"Are you satisfied with the field of Republican primary candidates?"

For MA:

Agree with the calls for views on MA health reform

"Do you strongly approve, approve, disapprove, or strongly disapprove of the job Mitt Romney did as governor of Massachusetts?"

As we have just passed the 7th anniversary of same-sex marriage in MA, that would seem to warrant some questions:

Do you support or oppose Massachusetts law, which allows gay and lesbian couples to marry?

What impact has same sex marriage had on you personally?

Options:
Positive impact
Negative impact
No impact

Anonymous said...

See if they like DeMint better or Graham better.

"Mike Capuano

I agree, those are the best names to poll. Can you also poll Brown's chances in a Republican primary.

As for SC, please poll a Haley/Sheheen rematch, as well as senatorial favorable ratings and Pres head-to-heads. Maybe even do gay marriage here, just to poll the floor of the country on an issue like this

The Interesting Times said...

Don't bother polling gay marriage in Massachusetts. The question is academic--they already have it there.

Find out if MA voters prefer Romneycare or Obamacare.

Maybe see how many are willing to switch from Romneycare to a single-payer system like Vermont's.

Mark B. said...

Wow! I think that idea about whether Mass. voters prefer single-payer or ACA-style Romneycare is great!

coolidgen said...

One more name to consider: Tom Conroy has jumped in. See http://www.wickedlocal.com/politics/congress/x311060093/Weymouth-Rep-Tom-Conroy-enters-Senate-race

Ask them what are the top sources they go to for news!

The Interesting Times said...

Please be sure to poll the Presidential primary in Massachusetts.

Yes, we all know Romney is going to win there, but Massachusetts isn't a winner-take-all state, so a strong second-place contender could also snag a significant number of delegates.

The Interesting Times said...

BTW, you may also want to just poll an "approval rating" of Massachusetts health care, i.e., "Do you think the current health care system in MA is good or bad?"

Todd said...

For South Carolina:

Do you have a state-issued driver's license or photo ID?

For Mass., Joe Kennedy vs Scott Brown

you should poll lindsay graham versus a more conservative challenger

Polling gay marriage is important, and is not, as one commenter above suggested, "academic."

The opposition to gay marriage is based on claims that it will hurt families and harm society. Accordingly, it is extremely useful to poll individuals in MA as to how gay marriage has affected them or their families, if at all. MA has the longest history with gay marriage, now over 7 years.

A similar question was posed in IA in a poll by the Des Moines Register. 92% of respondents said that the introduction of gay marriage had no impact. I believe 3 or 4 percent said they didn't know. And 4 percent or thereabouts said that it has had an impact, although the poll did not break that down into positive and negative impacts.

So even though gay marriage is likely here to stay in MA, that state's experience with it is informative to all of the other states considering it.
