How about the question like
"if you agreed with their positions, would you still be willing to vote for a candidate if they happened to be ______"
then fill in options like catholic, jewish, mormon, evangelical, black, hispanic, asian, gay, female, etc.
Get the national baseline for "Do you wish the South had won the Civil War?" for comparison against now-we-kinda-wish-we'd-let-them-go states. Also test Tom's South Carolina cousin in the Republican primary to see if she has a 14% national disapproval rating too (either she's surprisingly well-known, or that figure represents the percentage of people who automatically disapprove of any candidate but their favorite).
A completely apolitical one that might be interesting - "Do you consider yourself obese?" Medical records can tell us what percentage of people are actually obese, but this would tell us about perceptions.
"Which of the following is the LEAST trustworthy news source? ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, CNN, The Daily Show With Jon Stewart."
what about something on popularity/approval for unions? NCAE? SEANC? There have been a lot of voting/election related bills flying around the General Assembly, perhaps a question or two about some of those proposals (like making judicial races partisan, ending straight ticket voting, ending public financing for some Council of state races, nonpartisan redistricting process, etc.) Have you ever asked a demographic question on if the respondent considers themself to live in a rural, suburban, rural setting? Might be an interesting breakdown.
John Edwards indictment, but maybe campaign finance laws in general.
Ex.
"Should campaign finance laws regulating political contributions be strengthend, weakened, or stay as is?"
Do you support or oppose the Obama Justice Department's prosecution of John Edwards?
I think it would be extremely interesting if you could do questions on same-sex marriage in both polls.
Specifically, it would be awesome if you could do the same questions that you recently used in your Minnesota poll, where you asked "do you think same-sex marriage should be legal or illegal" AND your usual question "which of the following best describes your view on gay marriage..." because, as we saw, the results are very different when "civil unions" are an available response versus when it's a straight-up legal or illegal question.
It would be especially interesting to see the results of those two questions on the national level, since a number of recent reputable national polls have shown majority support. Of course, it would be equally interesting to see the results in North Carolina since the legislature is currently debating a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
The topic of same-sex marriage continues to be a controversial, divisive issue both nationally and locally, so I think including the two aforementioned questions on both polls would be very relevant and very interesting.
I also think it would be interesting to see views on abortion.

That should shed some light on the "birtherism = racism" claims...

I'll keep asking for this:
Poll "Was Obama born in the United States", as well as "Was McCain born in the United States" as a baseline.
McCain, of course, was born in the Panama Canal region (so the correct answer for him is "No.")

No one was interested in Obama's birth certificate until he looked likely to win the Presidency. Cain hasn't remotely approached that threshold yet.
When McCain was born, the Panama Canal Zone was still part of the United Stares. We didn't give it back to Panama until 1979 so in my mind that means McCain was born in the US.
How about an either or questions about cutting the deficit or cutting program a, b, c, d, etc. Obviously medicare, medicaid, social security should be included but defence, student loans, national parks, NIH, regulation of nuclear power plants, food safety.

For NC, in relation to election law changes currently being considered by the NC Gen Assembly:
1. Do you have a state-issued drivers license or photo ID?
2. Do you favor or oppose reducing the days early voting is available?
3. Do you favor or oppose removing the 'straight ticket' voting option from the ballot?
4. Do you favor or oppose a vote-by-mail option?

Should Governor Perdue veto the budget passed by the NC General Assembly?

I'd like to see another state legislature question, to see if the GOP has improved or lessened its chances there.
BTW, since it was brought up, If I remember correctly the House yesterday passed a bill that makes judicial races partisan, ending instant-runoff voting, and makes straight-ticket inapplicable to those offices for good measure. I think it also did away with some or all public financing, but all this of course would have to be verified.
Do gay marriage support please! Especially with rumors abound that the GA will try to get it onto the ballot as a const. amendment this Nov. We all know it would lose... but how badly?

- Interracial marriage - Recent poll from MS showed surprising results. It would be interesting to ask the same question in NC
- Reform/Regulation of Wall St - In the wake of the financial crisis, has the US done too little/too much/just enough to regulate Wall St.
Fox News just released a poll today showing Giuliani only down 4 on Obama, while Romney was down 7. So therefore, I suggest that you include Giuliani especially since he's been hinting that he may run. Poll him nationally and in NC.
Herman Cain, the new darling of Republican primary voters, has said that homosexuality is a sin and a choice. I'd like to see how many Republican primary voters agree with him.
