Taking suggestions for two things:
-Who should we include as the 4th Republican, along with Mike Huckabee, Sarah Palin, and Mitt Romney, on our monthly 2012 poll? We'll take nominations for about the next 24 hours and then put it to a vote. This could be a minor test of netroots strength.
-Any ideas for good outside the box (maybe crazy is a better word) polling questions for our national poll this month? We've done birthers, Obama as the anti-Christ, etc. in the past and we like to get something along those lines into every poll just to measure how much of the country buys into some of the pretty far fetched stuff floating around out there.

How about Tim Pawlenty? Other than the three you listed, he seems to be the most serious about running at this point.
May as well include Pawlenty since he made a bunch of noise in NY-23 and has a fancy new PAC, complete with a Ruffini-powered site.
For a crazy question: "Did the White House know about Hasan as a potential threat, and did they deliberately ignore intel to keep up relations with Muslims abroad?"
John Thune
Poll Jeb Bush...
Ask if voters think Michelle Obama really wears the pants in the White House.
Add John Thune !
Ron Paul :P Half joking, half serious. Seriously, who knows John Thune? .5% of the electorate? Paul at least has some name rec.
Pawlenty is the obvious choice it would seem.
T-Paw, definitely. Maybe Newt or Gary Johnson (then again, maybe not).
Yeah, I guess I'd have to say T-Paw.
Jim DeMint or Tom Coburn should be considered.
Mike Pence as the 4th Republican since he has been making Iowa noises and because I think Pawlenty is a "no go" from the start.
Possible alternative reality questions might include:
(1) Have you pre-ordered Sarah Palin's upcoming book, "Going Rogue"?
Follow-up: If not, do you plan to read it once it comes out?
I think this might be an interesting way to see if there is Palin support from mods and dems that they don't want to admit to on a poll. A book is a sort of benign way to show you're still interested in her.
(2) (a) Do you spend more than 1 hour per day watching Fox News?
(b) Do you think it is appropriate for the Obama Administration to wage war with Fox News?
(c) Do you think believe that the recent White House/Fox News war has done more to strengthen the Obama Administration or Fox News?
(3) Do you think that high-level Presidential appointees, sometimes referred to as "Czars", should require approval of the Senate?
(4) Do you believe that some of President Obama's advisors are Communists/Marxists? Do you approve of including Communists/Marxists in a White House administration?
Poll Rudy Guiliani and see how he does.
Someone unlikely to run but probably with a better reputation than Jeb Bush and the same level of name recognition.
There are rumors Pataki's interested, so maybe him. Thune is also a good suggestion.
Crazy question: Something about whether the government should stay out of Medicare, worded like some of the teabaggers have so the question doesn't give away that Medicare is a government program.
Kill two birds with one stone: Poll Glenn Beck as a presidential candidate.
Definitely you should include Ron Paul - just look at the recent speculation and grassroots drafting efforts going on with him for 2012.
Love the idea of polling a beck presidential candidacy either in the GOP primary or as a third party candidate
Ron Paul
You wanted the power of the Netroots? Remember that online poll that NPR did awhile back that went through stages and slowly eliminated people? Ron Paul won that. I think you should poll Ron Paul as the fourth Republican - I think that this is actually a VERY good idea. Remember that Paul seems to also be some of the inspiration for the Tea Party activists...
As for a national issue - gay marriage.
Ron Paul, please.
He came in 3rd place at CPAC 2009. And he'll likely win at CPAC 2010.
Ron Paul has as much recognition as the first three options this go around I would think. Pop him in there
Ron Paul 2012! Ron Paul 2012! Ron Paul 2012!
As for the question. Have you heard about Austrian Economics?
Have you read Ludwig Von Mises or Murray Rothbard?
We need a true constitutional conservative that knows reality economics and has a better foreign policy than everybody else. Ron Paul is that man.
Ron Paul should be the 4th one. He is the only one that is talking serious about the constitution and asks himself "Is this authorized by the constitution?" before he votes.
Ron Paul. How can you not include him. HR1207 with 311 co-sponsers. Continues to hold rallies drawing thousands. Is on major news and financial shows routinely. Has one of the largest grassroots followings in the Nation. Ron Paul cured my apathy, I cured my ignorance.
I think you need to include Ron Paul. It seems to me that he has gotten more positive media coverage over the past year than any other sitting Republican politician.
This is in stark contrast to the amount of coverage (both positive and negative) that he got while he was actually campaigning. It would be interesting to see if this has changed things.
Ron Paul
and #5 Gary Johnson
http://www.garyjohnson2012.com
Ron Paul should be included in the poll since he has came along way in name rec since the '08 primary. He's a heavyweight in the US House as his 'audit the fed' bill has over 310 cosponsors, including everyone of the GOP Congress people. He's more well known on TV whether it's Fox, CNN or MSNBC and has been a sought-after guest for years. Plus, Ron Paul is more closely aligned with the Tea Party movement than any other candidate. He's extremely popular up here in NH, the 1st primary state.
You should include Ron Paul in your 2012 poll. I am going to keep reminding people.
Ron Paul and Gary Johnson!
Ron Paul
Ron Paul is probably the only candidate I'd consider supporting in 2012.
Ron Paul. The rest are all identical to George W. Bush and will be as bad as Obama currently is.
Republicans will NEVER learn.
You all just keep nominating phonies that the media hypes and see what good it does. Even if you win, all you will get is an ambitious Bush-Gingrich closet liberal phony (Huckabee, Palin, Romney, Pawlenty etc)...
How about a REAL conservative for a change....RON PAUL 2012!
ron paul......a REAL conservative for a change
Ron Paul!!!!
ron paul
Ron Paul
Ron Paul - The Champion of the Constitution
Ron Paul should be the forth man in the poll. he has a HUGE following and massive support all around the globe, not just the US. he also was the only onw left with mccain in the elections.
Bloomberg would be an interesting candidate to throw in there.
As far as a national question goes... "are 'teabag protests' good or bad for the country?"
Ron. Paul.
Ron Paul is a year older than McCain now. That will make him 5 years older than McCain would have been had he been elected. He's too darn old.
Ron Paul
Fourth GOP 2012 candidate should be Mitch Daniels, Gov. Indiana.
Crazy question: was the Hasan shooting the act of a psychotic man or the act of a terrorist. Not that crazy a question but I would really be interested to know how public opinion is shaping up on this.
This question is a no brainer. Ron Paul, without question! No other candidate should even be considered. Ron Paul already has the recognition and I think the grassroots campaign efforts will be even greater the second time around. Many more people know who Ron Paul is now and I think would want to help! No other candidate has this kind of grassroots support! RON PAUL 2012
Ron Paul 2012
Without a shred of doubt, Dr. Ron Paul.
Ron Paul
Ron Paul - he's already been mentioned in the media as the "4th Republican" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kS80wMGeH3I
Ron Paul. No other potential candidate has the potential to get the young energized grassroot supporters behind them like he does. And he is a true conservative, and has the voting record to prove it. I want to see a candidater who voted with conservatism and with the constitution while a republican was in power. It's easy to do now as the opposition, but how many republicans did that while Bush was prez? Not many, but Dr. Paul is one.
Ron Paul
Ron Paul.
Rick Perry would be a good choice -- he's not usually included, and has pretty good name ID in GOP circles, particularly with tea party folks.
Ron Paul should be the 4th candidate. If he decideds to run he will make waves. He is a household name now.
Ron Paul. His predictions about the economy having come true will boost his poll numbers for sure.
Rudy.
T-Paw does not have national name rec yet. Neither does Jindal, Pence, or Ryan. The other choice is John Thune, because many people may still remember him from 2004. But, for now, I say Rudy.
Ron Paul would be my personal choice.
Ron Paul for sure. I'm sure the other folks named are decent folks but Ron Paul is the only person the Republican party should be taking seriously at this time.
Maybe Gary Johnson for kicks?
Ron Paul
Why not take this poll AFTER palin's book tour?
Rick Santorum
Put Ron Paul in the poll.
Add Ron Paul!
Here are two questions for you, Tom.
Has Barack Obama's presidency been what you thought you voted for?
Why do the Democrats fear Rush Limbaugh?
Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, and Judge Napolitano
Please include Ron Paul in your poll. He is really the only conservative that has any credibility left ... In my opinion, the rest have proven themselves to be no more than a bunch of liars and cheats who care more about the corporations that contribute to their candidacy than the people who they are supposed to be representing and protecting.
Thanks,
Chris R.
Seriously, why do Paulbots have to spam??!!? Concentrate on Kentucky, Paulbots!
Excellent point, also I think the fact that many of his economic predictions have come true will show that he not only does not lie but that he knows what he is talking about.
True, 76 is pretty old, in that case we should think about his son who is running for congress, in essence he will have the same credibility as Obama did.
Voters are fed up with these RINOs. Please include the only true-to-principles Republican out there: Ron Paul. Ron Paul has the credibility, the name recognition, and the Constitutional voting record to be a front-runner.
Ron Paul needs to be included if this poll is going to have any validity.
Ron Paul
Ron Paul should be added. Why?
Because.. RON PAUL WAS RIGHT! and still is. I know many people who say if they knew what they know now they would have voted for him hands down!
of course you still have the neocons that will never get educated to the facts and reality of what is happenning to the country. Cmon folks there is nothing wrong with changing your mind even if it means you were wrong before. Insanity: Repeating the same behavior over and over expecting a different result.
Do a poll on state secession from the union. Ask about:
1. Whether people believe it is constitutional
2. Whether people believe any states should secede now
3. As a control question, ask if it was a pro-secessionist leader or a pro-nationalist leader who once proposed sending black people off to their own colony/colonies away from whites (in reality, that proposal came from Abe Lincoln).
Ron Paul for 2012
Ron Paul 2012
I think you should put in Judge Napalotino... He's my pick but he'd never run! I think also adding Ron Paul would be good - yes he's old, BUT after Bush and OBAMA, I think the American people would see a huge difference between Obama and Paul. At least, Paul has military experience, and REAL life experience... Obama is a media creation with no substance... Paul, who is not perfect, but AT least he's a REAL person with real ideas... Republicans CAN NOT Win against Obama unless we run a person that real people can believe... Republican Party is that Corrupt and morally bankrupt... I hate the RNC and I've been a Republican all my life but I don't trust them and I won't vote for someone I know is a LIB... I like Palin as a person but I'm not sure about what she believes or if I Trust her not to be the RNC's puppet...
Ron Paul 2012. The man is principled, and has a better understanding of the economy than any other elected official in DC.
Ron Paul's economic predictions came true, but not because he is prescient... he has been exposed to the work of great minds. Read them yourselves: Ludwig von Mises, Henry Hazlitt, Murray Rothbard, Tom Woods, Peter Schiff...
The good Doctor, Dr. Ron Paul.
Draft Ron Paul for 2012.
Ron Paul is a definite must for your poll.
I'd like to see Ron Paul included because I think his street cred (and media cred) has risen voluminously since last year's election. He's a hotly-sought commentator on TV frequently.
Dr. Ron Paul.
He should be President now and we would be coming out of the woods already if he was.
Ron Paul
easy choice
Ron Paul of course! He's not allowed in any other major poll so why not this one? Give the man a dam bone!!
Ron Paul!
Ron Paul
